The Hyogo Institute for Traumatic Stress (HITS) was opened on April 1st in 2004 in order to address mental health issues of trauma survivors.  Since the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995, Hyogo Prefecture has been paying special attention to issues faced by victims of disasters and crime.  HITS is the first research institute ever established in Japan which focuses primarily on traumatic stress and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  HITS has three main functions: research, training, and consultation/counseling.
